When Is a Tooth Extraction Necessary?

When Is a Tooth Extraction Necessary?

At Healthy Smiles of Georgia, we perform tooth extractions on a regular basis and also perform dental restorations. It is our goal to save teeth whenever possible but sometimes this is not a possibility, and at that point, a tooth extraction can become necessary. In order to proceed, we will first examine you and determine the position of the tooth that needs to be removed. This will let us know whether or not we can do so by wiggling the tooth and then extracting it or if we need to perform oral surgery in order to access the tooth.  When you visit our Alpharetta, GA general dentist office, we will let you know what your options are and what to expect.  In the meantime, here are signs that you may need this dental procedure.

When is a tooth extraction necessary?

#1 The tooth has become infected.

If the infected tooth is beyond repair, the best course of action is to extract it so that the infection cannot spread to any of the surrounding teeth or to the jawbone.

#2 Your tooth is impacted.

If your tooth is growing in impacted or sideways, there will be a layer of gums and, potentially, bone on top of it. This can be both uncomfortable and dangerous to your oral health as pockets are created where bacteria and food can gather and build up, increasing the risk of your teeth becoming infected.

#3 The tooth is damaged beyond repair.

If we are unable to restore your damaged tooth with a dental crown or some other type of dental restoration, we may need to extract it in order to prevent you from experiencing unnecessary discomfort

#4 You want to have your wisdom teeth removed.

At Healthy Smiles of Georgia, many of our 30004 patients have their teeth extracted because they have previously worn braces and do not want to risk their wisdom teeth pushing their other teeth forward.

Alternative Solutions from an Alpharetta General Dentist

At Healthy Smiles of Georgia, we are interested in providing our patients with alternatives to a tooth extraction. While we can certainly extract your teeth if that becomes necessary, it is in your best interest for us to help save your teeth whenever possible. This is because your teeth play an important role in your overall oral health and so does your root system. Whenever you have a tooth that either falls out or is extracted, your jaw will no longer receive the stimulation that it once did. This can lead to a process known as resorption. With resorption, calcium is leached from your jawbone for use in other areas of the body. While natural, this can leave you with a sunken appearance and a jaw that is not as dense as it needs to be, and therefore, weakened. This is why we will often suggest performing a procedure like a root canal or completing a dental restoration as a means of preventing a tooth extraction. However, the only way to know whether or not these solutions would work is to examine you thoroughly in our Alpharetta office. To schedule a dental examination, call (678) 762-0690.  After conducting an exam, we can let you know whether or not you do indeed, need a tooth extraction.
