What Are Dental Crowns?
A dental crown is a cap that surrounds a tooth. Dr. Jai typically uses a crown to restore a damaged tooth, though it can also serve a cosmetic purpose to improve a smile's appearance. Crowns come in three materials — all-metal, ceramic-on-metal, and all-ceramic — and the best choice depends on where in the mouth it's going. Front teeth get all-ceramic where possible since it looks the most natural; ceramic-on-metal is common elsewhere since it looks natural while offering the durability metal provides.
What Are Dental Bridges?
A dental bridge replaces a missing tooth without dentures or surgery. The new tooth is held in place by two crowns on the neighboring teeth, made from ceramic or porcelain to match your smile — a popular option for patients who want a permanent, natural-looking replacement.
Before the Procedure
If you're getting a crown or bridge for cosmetic reasons, whiten your teeth first. The material used is both stain- and bleach-resistant, so it'll be made to match whatever shade your teeth are at the time — permanently. If you whiten afterward, the restoration stays the old color while your natural teeth get brighter. We also recommend taking a day, or a couple if possible, off work, since some sensitivity afterward is normal and it's easier without a busy schedule to manage.
The Process
Both procedures work best with an experienced cosmetic dentist who can complete them naturally, and we can keep you fully comfortable throughout with sedation dentistry. An impression is taken first so the crown or bridge can be made in a dental lab.
For a crown, we prepare the tooth by removing a portion of the enamel so there's room for the crown without pushing neighboring teeth out of place, then clean it and secure a temporary with removable glue — worn for around two weeks while the permanent piece is fabricated. Be careful with diet and brushing during this stage since the temporary is designed to come off.
When the permanent piece is ready, you return so the temporary can be removed and the permanent one bonded in place. For a bridge, this means a crown goes on each of the two neighboring teeth, with a piece resembling natural gum tissue holding the new tooth in between — the two crowns act as anchors, making the new tooth as durable as possible.
After the Procedure
Your teeth will be somewhat sensitive after being prepared — that's why the temporary exists, and oral pain medication for a couple of days is usually enough once the permanent piece is placed. A crown surrounds and protects the tooth so you can eat your favorite foods again regardless of how damaged it was, restoring normal eating, drinking, and speaking. A bridge works the same way, letting you eat and speak normally without worrying about the new tooth loosening or falling out — both suited to an active lifestyle.
